This is not the Kashmir Great Lakes trek. This is for the adventurer who has heard whispers of something wilder, more remote, and more challenging. The Tosa Maidan Lakes Trek is a true expedition into a part of Kashmir that remains a secret to the outside world, culminating in the discovery of a cluster of breathtakingly beautiful and pristine high-altitude lakes.
Starting from the vast meadows of Tosa Maidan, this route climbs high into the Pir Panjal range, taking you over ridges and into secluded valleys where few trekkers have ever set foot. You will witness the stunning Godsar, Neelsar, and Dhamamsar lakes in complete solitude. This is a journey defined by raw wilderness, challenging ascents, and the profound peace of the high Himalayas.
Led by our most experienced local guides, this is a fully supported expedition. We handle all logistics, safety, and camp comforts. You just need to bring your strength, endurance, and a powerful spirit of adventure.
Our team will pick you up from Srinagar Airport (latest by 1 PM). From there, we begin our scenic 3-hour drive to the village of Drung. The bustling city will give way to the crisp mountain air as we ascend. Our campsite is located near the beautiful Drung waterfall. After settling in with hot tea, your trek leader will conduct a detailed briefing for the expedition ahead.
The trek begins! We start our ascent through a beautiful coniferous forest. The trail is a pleasant mix of forest walks and open meadows. After a few hours, the tree line recedes, and we enter the vast valley leading to Dhanwas. We'll set up camp in this picturesque meadow, often visited by the children of local shepherds.
Today, we gain more altitude. The trail is a beautiful walk through sprawling meadows, with gradual ascents and descents along a water canal carved out by locals. The views of the surrounding snow-capped peaks become more dramatic. We reach the scenic campsite of Pehjan, a perfect spot to relax and acclimatize. If weather permits, we'll have our first bonfire of the trek.
After a steady climb from our campsite, the world opens up into the legendary Tosa Maidan, the largest alpine meadow in Kashmir. The sheer scale of this grassland is awe-inspiring. We will walk across this "King of Meadows," keeping an eye out for the Pashmina goats that graze here, and set up camp at a vantage point offering stunning views.
The trek gets more challenging today as we climb towards the lake region. The trail is mostly uphill, demanding good endurance. We ascend towards a high ridge and then descend to the beautiful campsite at Noonwan, located near a giant boulder and serving as the gateway to the Greater Lakes. This is arguably our most beautiful campsite yet.
The day you've been waiting for. We start early, leaving our main luggage at camp. Today's trek is a challenging but incredibly rewarding loop to explore four stunning lakes: Neelsar, Dhamamsar, Bhansar, and the magnificent Godsar Lake. Each lake has its unique character and color. We will spend the day exploring this divine landscape before returning to our Noonwan campsite in the evening.
Our last day on the trail. We trek back down from Noonwan to the main Tosa Maidan area, a different and faster route. Our vehicles will be waiting at the road-head to drive us back to Srinagar. The tour services end as we drop you in the city, leaving you with incredible memories of a truly epic trek.
This is a challenging (Level 3) trek. It is suitable for experienced trekkers who have completed at least one or two multi-day Himalayan treks. It requires excellent physical fitness, stamina, and mental resilience to walk for 6-7 hours daily at high altitudes.
No. To help you focus on the challenging terrain, your main rucksack (up to 10kg) will be carried by our porters or mules. You only need to carry a small daypack (20-30L) with your daily essentials like water, a rain jacket, snacks, and a camera.
Yes, travel insurance is mandatory for this expedition. Given the remote and challenging nature of the trek, your insurance must cover high-altitude trekking (up to 4,000m) and emergency medical evacuation.
In the mountains, the weather is always unpredictable. Days can be sunny and pleasant, but temperatures can drop significantly in the evening and at night, especially at higher campsites. You must be prepared with warm layered clothing and proper rain gear.
The Tosa Maidan Lakes trek is far more remote and less frequented than KGL. It offers a greater sense of solitude and exploration. While KGL is known for its rolling meadows between lakes, this trek involves more ridge walks and challenging ascents to reach the secluded lake basins.
